Matara also makes for a perfect pilgrims destination. Besides the Buddhist temples the Old Dutch Church at Matara fort, The Vishnu temple at Devinuwara village, and The Mulgirigala rock temple with a statue of Buddha reclining and smiling are favorite with the tourists.
The Beaches at Matara are added attractions of Matara. The numerous small beaches in between Galle and Matara are most sought out. Hikkaduwa beach is a favorite with divers. The corals and tropical fish are abundant in the sanctuary. A blowhole throwing huge columns of water when the ocean wave’s break, is a spectacular sight to watch at Kudawella! Stilt fishing is a favorite in Matara. The deep rooted stilts form a base for you to stand and throw your angle for fishing making for a perfect outing.
