Located in the town of Dambulla Sigiriya refers to a site of historical and archaeological significance that has mammoth columns of rocks approximately 200 meters high. The massive gateway built by King Kasyapa decorated with Frescoes on the sides resembled a gigantic Lion that resulted in the name of the place as Sihagiri, The Lion Rock. Today Sigiriya is a UNESCO declared heritage site and reflects the best examples of the planning of the town back in the days. Today one of the prime tourist destinations Sigiriya attracts many visitors who enjoy the beauty and the frescoes surrounding the region.
The elaborate and extremely imaginative site of Sigiriya takes the tourists into wondering how important the planning and intertwining of the natural surroundings to produce an end result as magnificent as it stands in the form of lion rock must have been to the King. On the west you can see the royal park planned symmetrically. The water retaining structures, still operational hydraulic systems are jaw dropping. A man made reservoir in the south, five gates at the entrance and al elaborate gate for the royals all are standing example of architectural planning par excellence.
Sigiriya makes for an attractive tourist spot in Srilanka tour package. The Frescoes appear like a picture gallery covering the whole of the western face of the rock. The Frescoes differ from the face as opposed to the ones on ceiling at Cobra hood cave. In general the painting style is absolutely unique with close reference to the painting style in Ajanta caves India.
The gardens are the primary attraction of Sigiriya. Boulder gardens, cave gardens and terraced gardens stand as the oldest landscaped gardens in the world. The aerial view of the Sigiriya garden as seen from the summit point of the Rock top gives a clear picture of how magnificently planned the water garden and the outer moat were. The spiral stairway, pool in the garden, ruins of the lion, rock shelters and more make one go back in history. Tourists have fancied Sigiriya for its historic existence and extraordinary locale.
